Since reusable bottles are a permanent solution to drinking, they’re going to be traveling with you regularly. This constant use is great, but it does mean your bottle will retain moisture to some degree. If your bottle is continually wet, bacteria will undoubtedly build up if not cleaned. For this reason, it’s good to get in the habit of cleaning your bottle regularly so you don’t make yourself sick!

Avoid The Dishwater: Generally, this is not a good way to clean a reusable water bottle, unless stated otherwise by the manufacturer of the bottle. A lot of popular bottles are not dishwasher safe due to their coated exteriors. This paint can come off during a washing cycle, so it’s best to avoid the dishwasher unless you know for sure the bottle will survive.

Hot Soapy Water Wash: This is our favourite go-to way for bottles that don’t need a really deep clean. Choose an organic dishwashing liquid and add some to your empty bottle. Add warm to hot water to fill the bottle about 3/4. Attach the lid to the bottle and shake for one minute. Pour the water out, refill with cold water and pour out again.

The Vinegar Trick: Vinegar is a great all-natural cleaner for killing certain germs and bacteria. This cleaning method won’t kill all bacteria, but it is good for quick way to clean a reusable water bottle. After washing with soapy water, rinse your bottle well. Fill your bottle one fifth of the way full with white vinegar. Fill the rest with water, let it stand overnight, and in the morning give it a good rinse it out.

DIY Cleaning Solution: Wanting to wash your bottle a little more thoroughly? Make your own cleaning solution by mixing one cup of baking soda OR one cup of white vinegar with one cup hot water. Stir the mixture to dissolve, then pour it into your bottle. Let your bottle then soak overnight. The next day, wash the mixture out and rinse bottle well. Leave it to dry.

What to do if you notice rust-like spots
If you haven’t cleaned your water bottle in a while, then you may notice a rusting issue. This shouldn’t actually be rust, as most bottles are made from stainless steel and don’t experience the corrosive rust typically found in other metals. These rust like spots are known as “pitting,”, and are only surface deep. They can be easily cleaned or scrubbed away.
How to remove pitting spots: If you want to really give your bottle a great clean to remove all pitting spots, try using water bottle cleaning tablets. Brands such as Bottle Bright, Efferdent or SIGG sell these products. They are simple to use – just fill your bottle with water, drop the tablet in, and allow the tablet to dissolve and sit for 15 to 30 minutes. Once the tablet has dissolved, rinse your bottle out and it is good to drink again!
