Just a few years ago, Herschel took the classic backpack and made it their own. Today, we outline the many Herschel backpack styles which have become classics in their own right. If you’re looking for a laid-back new backpack for work or uni, you’re going to want to know the subtle differences to pick the right one. So we’ve put together this little guide to the Herschel backpack range for you.
Herschel Pop Quiz Backpack
The Herschel Pop Quiz is the most popular Herschel backpack here at Rushfaster. Its large capacity, faux fur-lined padded laptop section and durable construction make it a great workhorse for uni students and creative professionals alike.
The Pop Quiz gives you two extra compartments you won’t find on other Herschel backpacks: A faux fur-lined sunglass pocket at the top and an extra compartment at the very front. The latter is protected by a weatherproof zip and lining, making it the best spot for electronic devices.
Herschel Settlement Backpack
The Herschel Settlement is for people who aren’t concerned with bells and whistles. Its uncomplicated layout features just one main and one smaller compartment on the front.
The Settlement is one of the sturdier Herschel backpacks, making it a great choice for everyday use. It also expands out a little when fully loaded. So there’s plenty of room to fit your gym gear or even a DSLR camera, even if you’ve put your laptop in the back.
One thing to keep an eye out for is that some Herschel Settlement backpacks only come with 1 zipper pull on the main compartment. To get a deeper insight, check out our in-depth review. And for something slightly smaller, consider the Herschel Settlement Mid Volume.
Herschel Heritage Backpack
The Herschel Heritage is the Herschel backpack for people who like to travel a bit lighter and don’t want extra bulk getting in the way. It isn’t overburdened with extra padding on the back panel or on laptop sleeve. But it’s still large enough to fit your laptop, drink bottle, lunch and a sweater. This bag is definitely in our top 3 Herschel backpacks.
Classic Herschel Backpack (Not Pictured)
The Herschel Classic backpack is the most stripped back backpack in this guide. It’s lightweight, isn’t overly padded and doesn’t have a laptop sleeve, making it more suited to days running errands. It’s also a good choice if you’re looking for something casual to chuck your gym gear into.
Little America Herschel Backpack
The Herschel Little America backpack is inspired by old-school mountaineering design standards and is perhaps the best Herschel backpack for cyclists. It features a drawstring closure and magnetic exterior straps. The lack of zips means you can pack a lot into the Little America, without worrying if you’ll be able to get it closed. There’s also plenty of padding on the bottom and along the straps. This means you don’t have to worry when you place it onto hard surfaces – your laptop will be nice and safe.
At 25L, the Little America gives you heaps of space for your gym gear, uni stuff or travel essentials. It also means it’s quite big and tall. Generally, if you’re shorter than 5ft 7in, you’ll probably want to consider the smaller Little America Mid Size (the 17L version). Take a look at our YouTube video for a better idea of the size differences.

Retreat, Post & Dawson Herschel Backpacks
Like the look of the Herschel Little America? The Herschel Retreat backpack channels the same classic mountaineering aesthetic. It has a roomy 19.5L main compartment but is a little less padded on the back than the Little America, making it a great choice for people who don’t want the extra bulk. Inside, the faux fur padded laptop sleeve makes will give you peace of mind.
All of the Herschel backpacks here are great options for carrying all your everyday essentials. They vary subtly in terms of padding and shape, which is why we’ve carefully profiled them for you. If you still can’t make up your mind, head over to Rushfaster for more on Herschel backpacks.
