It’s tough being born into a family of high achievers. There’s a lot of hype to live up to and the pressure of having to follow in the giant footsteps of previous champions. This must be exactly how the Beoplay H5 Wireless Earphones felt when they were introduced this year into Bang & Olufsen’s ever impressive audio range. The H5 earphones are the new kid on the block and the company’s first foray into the wireless in-ear market. We spent some time giving the latest baby of the B&O collection a little test drive.

Beoplay H5 Wireless Earphones Package

Design

It comes as no surprise that the Beoplay H5 Wireless Earphones are sleek and minimal. Crafted with Bang & Olufsen’s signature sophistication, these in-ear buds look elegantly discreet when worn. Designed for active lifestyles, the earphone housing is made from textured rubber and polymer which are resistant to sweat and moisture. The durable fabric cord is also a big plus and eliminates the need to frustratingly untangle the earphones before use. They are currently available in black, dusty rose and moss green. Each package includes the earphones, additional earbuds, a charging dock, plus a small carry bag to store all the bits and bobs.

Comfort

The first thing we noticed about the Beoplay H5 Wireless Earphones was their interesting shape. It does take a little while to become accustomed to the silhouette, which has been designed for a snug fit. Those who aren’t used to wearing in-ear headphones might experience some slight discomfort when trying these on for the first time. We found the shape of the buds to be somewhat difficult to manoeuvre into the ear at first, and particularly so for anyone who has smaller ears. The key to making these really work is to spend some time playing around with all the interchangeable ear tips that come inside the package and eventually, you’ll find an earpiece that’s perfect for you.

Functionality

We had to give these earphones big props for functionality and user-friendliness, especially while on the move. They’ve been designed for active lifestyles so the earbuds are equipped with ingenious magnets that connect together. This allows the Beoplay H5 Wireless Headphones to be worn like a necklace when not in use. Jogging or running won’t separate the magnets either. We found this to be a really useful feature because we essentially never had to worry about packing them away. Simply leave them around the neck, ready for the next listen. Bringing the magnets together will also automatically send the earphones into power saving mode.

Speaking of which, let’s talk battery life for a moment. The Beoplay H5’s 100mAh capacity battery will only keep the music flowing for about 4.5 – 5 hours. This is less than average compared to other wireless earbuds like the Jaybird X2, which last around 8 hours before a top up is needed. If you plan on listening to music throughout the entire day at work and then on the commute home, we’d recommend popping the charging dock in the carry pouch and taking it with you, just in case. We used the earphones here and there over 5 days before we needed to recharge them, and for sporadic bursts of listening, the shorter battery life didn’t cause any problems.

Sound Quality

As expected from audio experts Bang & Olufsen, the sound quality of the Beoplay H5 Wireless Headphones is impressive. The in-ear buds produce crisp and bright vocal tones with rich treble. If this isn’t really your listening style, though, it’s very easy to customise your audio preferences with the Beoplay App. To give you a better idea of what setting goes with what music genre, here are the tracks that we tested.

Beoplay H5 Wireless Earphones Beoplay App

Arcade Fire “The Suburbs”

Beoplay setting: Bright

The background music was deep and layered, allowing us to really hear each instrument clearly and adding a lot of dimension to the song. We found that the “bright” setting suited this laid back indie-pop song quite well.

Empire of the Sun “Walking on a Dream”

Beoplay setting: Bright & Excited

There’s something about this track that just makes you want to get moving. We had this playing at the gym and found that a mix between the “bright” and “excited” presets worked best for high-energy exercise playlists. The Bluetooth connection also remained strong and didn’t drop out during the workout. We had zero problems leaving the phone in a gym bag on the floor while running on the treadmill.

Nirvana “Smells Like Teen Spirit”

Beoplay setting: Warm (pinched)

A gentle pinch with two fingers will expand the circle on the Beoplay App, allowing you to increase the intensity of any chosen setting. So we felt it was only fitting to test out this pinching option with one of the most famous rock songs ever written. We found that a heightened “warm” preset suited this genre incredibly well, leaving vocals clear and sharp but also really pumping up the bass and the drums in the background.
